The History of TheScheduleCenter

Writing can be difficult, but writing can also be therapeutic.  My business coach told me I needed to write the story of the creation of TheScheduleCenter.com and I’m glad he did.

My background has always been one of entrepreneurship.  As a contractor, business was going OK but my friends were all asking me to “check out their potential new homes”.  So I began investigating the home inspection industry.

In 1999, I started United Professional Real Estate Inspectors, Inc.  As I built the organization and brought on additional inspectors, my “shiny object syndrome” quickly became the obvious Achilles Heel for my operations.  Trying to stay on top of the scheduling, communications, paperwork, report delivery, payments, business surveys, and all the marketing projects continued to break down.

Agents and clients would get frustrated with the failures my personal struggles created.  So, I knew it was the time to do 2 things.  1, hire a personal assistant to help me with and 2, build systems to make sure that all the things that a successful service company SHOULD be doing, gets done.  Over the next 5 years, these two elements came together nicely, and the business grew and grew.  But there was 1 fatal flaw.  All my business systems were built around that human personal assistant.  A personal assistant who always wanted to grow and prosper herself.

So in mid 2005, she quit to start her own independent call center, great for her (I love entrepreneurship) but the wheels came off the bus.  Literally, because of my personal failings, by winter 2006, my inspection company was down to just me and 1 other inspector, and not enough work for just one of us.  While this erosion of my business was occurring, I was commiserating with my neighbor, Roy, about the problems.  Little did I know that he was a senior troubleshooting programmer with one of MicroSoft’s major partners.

After he asked a few questions about by business operations, he asked 1 simple question “Why can’t you use technology to perform the same functions . . . faster AND more consistent?”  I never considered the power of programming business operations because I never worked in that space.  I was always a “I’ll do it myself” builder of business systems and I couldn’t write a line of code if my life depended on it.  But Roy on the other hand has the gift.  Not only does he know his coding, but he has the unique ability to take a company owner’s “intellectual vomit” and distill it down to what they really need for improved operations.

So Roy and I had further discussions and TheScheduleCenter.com was born.  It started as a simple scheduling application and over the past 5 years has continued to grow to cover every aspect of the day to day business operations of a service company.
